Flowers for an occasion are a bouquet or arrangement sent for a specific reason: a birthday, an anniversary, a name day, a thank-you or just because. At Rīgas Ziedi a third of all orders are for birthdays, followed by love messages and thank-yous, and the most frequent recipient is a mother. Bouquets start from 24.25 EUR (sunflowers) and from 39.60 EUR (a rose bouquet); florist's bouquets are most often ordered for 45 to 75 EUR. We are a local florist with our own shop at Tallinas iela 83 and deliver in Riga within 2 hours, to homes, offices and hotels, with a handwritten card in English, Latvian or Russian.
What people in Riga send flowers for: our order statistics
We analysed almost 10,000 card texts from our orders (no names or addresses, only the occasion). This is what we found:
- Birthday 35 % and anniversary of a round age 4 %: almost every second order.
- Love 14 %: "I love you" goes to partners and to family, and to family even more often.
- Thank you 11 %: to a doctor, a colleague, a teacher, a neighbour.
- Just because 9 %: "have a nice day", "to make you smile".
- Name day 6 %, a Latvian tradition, almost only for Latvian recipients.
- Then 8 March, wedding anniversary, Mother's Day, sympathy, apology, Valentine's Day, a new baby, get well, each 1 to 3 %.
Where the recipient is mentioned: mother 47 %, wife or girlfriend 25 %, a female colleague 12 %, grandmother 10 %. So the advice below follows what actually happens, not the holiday calendar.
Birthday and anniversary
For a birthday half of our customers choose roses, the other half a florist's mixed bouquet. Roses are the safe choice for a wife, girlfriend or colleague; a mixed bouquet looks more personal and bigger for the same money. For a round anniversary roses are chosen even more often (almost half), and every sixth order adds sweets. For a big occasion 51 roses or a large bouquet with lisianthus and eucalyptus works well. For a mother or grandmother
For a mother only one in four chooses roses; mixed bouquets in soft tones, tulips in spring, peonies in summer and spray roses in autumn are more common. Mothers are a fifth of all birthday orders. A bouquet in pastel tones or peony spray roses work well. If you are abroad and your mother or partner lives in Riga, this is the most common order we get from English-speaking customers: we deliver, call the recipient at the door and send you a confirmation.
Name day
A Latvian name day is a smaller occasion than a birthday: bouquets are lighter and brighter, sunflowers, spray roses with gypsophila, a small seasonal bouquet, often sent to the workplace. If your partner or friend in Riga is Latvian, their name day is in the Latvian calendar and a small bouquet on that day is a very local, very appreciated gesture.
Thank you and flowers to an office
A thank-you bouquet should be neutral and not strongly scented if it goes to an office or a doctor's room: white and green tones, lisianthus, spray roses, or a flower box that needs no vase. Two sentences on the card are enough; the courier hands the flowers over in person and calls ahead if the recipient is not there.
Love, wedding anniversary and apology
Here roses have no competition: red, pink or purple, 50 cm long, 11 to 25 stems. An apology bouquet is usually bigger than an everyday one, every eighth customer takes 51 or 101 roses. For a romantic surprise without a date, the romantic bouquet with roses, lisianthus and eucalyptus is the usual choice. All roses in one place: rose bouquets.
For a man
Flowers for men are ordered less often, but demand is growing. Two options work: a snack box for a man instead of or together with flowers, or a bouquet in firm shapes and dark or orange tones without pink, for example Colorful Autumn or a bouquet of orange roses.
New baby and get well
To a hospital or to a home with a newborn it is better to send an arrangement in a box or a basket: it needs no vase, does not leak and sits on a table. In these cases every fourth customer chooses a box and only every fifth roses. For a get-well wish a fruit basket also works. Check the ward's rules on flowers before sending to a hospital.
Graduation, teachers and 1 September
For a teacher or a graduate choose a bouquet that is easy to carry and lasts a few hours without water: sunflowers, spray roses, compact roses. On graduation days demand peaks within one day, so order a day ahead if you want a specific colour.
Sympathy

How to order flowers for an occasion in Riga
We tie the bouquets in our own shop at Tallinas iela 83 and deliver in Riga within 2 hours when the order arrives during working hours; online orders are accepted until 17:30, on Saturdays until 14:30. Write the card text in the order and we write it by hand in English, Latvian or Russian. For a surprise the courier does not call the recipient in advance, but we let you know as soon as the flowers are handed over. Within 50 km of Riga we deliver by prior arrangement. We are a local florist, not a relay service: the whole amount goes into the flowers.
