What a cut hydrangea is and where it comes from
Cut hydrangeas are varieties of the bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) grown in greenhouses specifically for the vase: a long, firm stem of 50 to 90 cm with one large head at the top. Almost all the hydrangeas we buy come from Dutch growers; they are available all year round, with the widest choice from June to November. Latvian-grown cut hydrangeas are practically absent from the market.
Varieties and colours we buy
These varieties appear most often in our suppliers' price lists:
- Verena: the most common variety, in pink, blue and white (Verena, Verena Blue, White Verena); a large, dense head on a 60 to 80 cm stem.
- Royal Parade: pink to deep pink, with a longer stem up to 90 cm; chosen for tall vases and large bouquets.
- Glowing Alps: hot pink, the brightest of the pinks.
- Heaven Blue, Royal Benefit, Pimpernel: the blue and lavender varieties.
- Royal Princess, White Verena: the whites, which turn greenish with time.
- Classic (e.g. Verena Classic, Royal Parade Classic): the so-called antique hydrangeas, harvested later and two-toned: pink with green, blue with burgundy. They last longest and suit autumn bouquets.
Colour is not only a matter of variety: the grower steers it through soil acidity. In acidic soil with aluminium the flower turns blue, in neutral or chalky soil it stays pink. That is why the same Verena can be pink or blue.

How long hydrangeas last and why they wilt
A fresh hydrangea lasts 5 to 10 days in a vase, Classic varieties up to 2 weeks. A hydrangea drinks not only through the stem but also through its petals, so it wilts faster than roses if there is too little water or the room is hot. If the head droops, submerge the whole flower in cool water for 2 to 3 hours, recut the stem at an angle and put it in a deep vase: in most cases it recovers. Basic rules for all cut flowers: recut stems, change the water every two days, keep the vase away from radiators and fruit.

Online orders are accepted until 17:30, on Saturdays until 14:30; within 50 km of Riga we deliver by prior arrangement.
