Flower Card Messages in Latvian: 40 Phrases with Translations

Every bouquet from Rīgas Ziedi can carry a free card with your message. You can write it in English and the recipient will understand it, but a line in Latvian, even a short one, lands differently. Below are 40 ready-to-copy messages in Latvian for the occasions people abroad most often send flowers for, each with an English translation. Copy the Latvian text with its accents into the order notes and our florist writes it on the card.

Three things to know before you write

• Accents matter. Latvian uses ā, ē, ī, ū, š, ž, č, ņ, ķ, ļ, ģ. "Sveiciens" and "sveiciens" look alike, but "mīļā" (dear, feminine) without accents becomes "mila", which is not a word. Copy the text exactly, accents included
• Latvian marks gender. Words for "dear" and "beloved" change depending on whether you write to a woman or a man. Each message below shows both where needed: (f) for a woman, (m) for a man
• Names change too. To address someone, Latvian uses a special form: Anna becomes "Anna!", but Jānis becomes "Jāni!", Kristaps becomes "Kristap!". If you are unsure, leave the name out and write "Mīļā" or "Mīļais" instead, or ask us and we will check it

Birthday (dzimšanas diena)

• Daudz laimes dzimšanas dienā! - Happy birthday! (the standard phrase, works for anyone)
• Sirsnīgi sveicu dzimšanas dienā! - Warm birthday greetings!
• Lai šis gads nes prieku un veselību! - May this year bring joy and health!
• Lai piepildās visi sapņi! - May all your dreams come true!
• Mīļā Mammu, daudz laimes! Domāju par Tevi. - Dear Mum, happy birthday! Thinking of you
• Mīļais Tēti, daudz laimes dzimšanas dienā! - Dear Dad, happy birthday!
• Lai skaista diena un vēl skaistāks gads! - A beautiful day and an even more beautiful year!
• Apaļā jubilejā - ar mīlestību un lepnumu. - On your round anniversary, with love and pride (for 50, 60, 70 and so on)

Name day (vārda diena)

In Latvia every first name has a date in the calendar, and name days are celebrated almost like birthdays, with flowers, cake and guests. If you have a Latvian friend, their name day is an easy win. Look up the date in our name day calendar.

Mother's Day and Women's Day

Mother's Day in Latvia is the second Sunday of May. 8 March, International Women's Day, is still widely celebrated with flowers for mothers, wives, colleagues and teachers.

• Mīļā Mammu, paldies par visu. Mīlu Tevi. - Dear Mum, thank you for everything. I love you
• Labākajai mammai pasaulē! - To the best mum in the world!
• Sveicu 8. martā! - Greetings on 8 March!

Sympathy

How the card works when you order

Write your message in the "greeting card" field of the order form. Our florist writes it by hand on a card and attaches it to the bouquet at no extra cost.
