Types of Cut Flowers and Their Names: What Florists in Latvia Buy

Types of cut flowers that florists in Latvia buy wholesale come to about 30 basic types and more than 300 varieties. One supplier price list in October 2026 had 521 lines: 168 rose varieties, 76 spray roses, 37 chrysanthemums, 16 carnations, 11 gerberas, 10 tulips, 6 freesias, 6 anthuriums, 4 lilies, orchids, irises and 76 seasonal flowers from dahlias to waxflower. Almost everything is imported: roses from Ecuador, Kenya and the Netherlands, carnations from Colombia, alstroemeria from Kenya, gerberas, chrysanthemums, tulips and lilies from the Netherlands. This guide lists every type with its name, variety examples, stem lengths and vase life, from a local florist in Riga.

Roses (Rosa)

The biggest group: 168 large-headed rose varieties in one price list. Ecuadorian roses have the largest heads and longest stems, 40 to 90 cm: Explorer, Freedom, Mondial, Pink Mondial, Playa Blanca, Deep Purple, Mandala, Candlelight. Dutch and Kenyan roses have medium heads, 40 to 70 cm: Red Naomi, Avalanche, Athena, Madam Red, Jumilia, Marie-Claire, Tacazzi. Garden-style roses with full, ruffled heads form a separate group: Country Peonia, Kensington Gardens, Lincoln Park, Mansfield Park. Roses last 7 to 12 days in a vase. Spray roses (Rosa, spray)

Spray roses carry 3 to 7 smaller flowers on one stem, so a bouquet looks denser. 76 varieties: Giselle, Sweet Giselle, Julietta, Silva Pink, Summer Dance, Barbados, Keijsers Coral, Fireworks, Bombastic, Mansfield Park (the peony spray rose). Stems 40 to 70 cm, vase life 7 to 10 days. Example: spray roses and gypsophila.

Lisianthus (Eustoma)

Delicate, rose-like flowers with several buds per stem: Alissa, Mariachi, Corelli, Chaconne, Croma and Rosanne varieties in white, pink, lavender, blue and green. The longest-lasting bouquet flower, 10 to 14 days, opening bud after bud. The base flower of our florist's bouquets together with roses and spray roses.

Gerberas (Gerbera)

Large gerberas 10 to 12 cm across (Don Leo, Dynamic, Glossy, Peppa, Snow King) and mini gerberas 6 to 8 cm (Abby Lou, Albino, Café, Petticoat, Suri). Delivered in water, stems 45 to 50 cm, vase life 7 to 10 days in shallow clean water. Bright orange, yellow, red, pink, white.

Chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum)

37 varieties in three types: large single-headed (Baltica, Altaj, Magnum, Antonov, Pjotr, Bigoudi), spray chrysanthemums (Radost, Haydar, Pina Colada, Lionking) and small-flowered santini (Aurinko, Baykal, Madiba). They last 2 to 3 weeks, longer than any other cut flower. In Latvia chrysanthemums are bought mainly for sympathy flowers; in bouquets santini is used as a filler.

Carnations (Dianthus)

Standard carnations from Colombia (Bizet, Brisa, Damina, Doncel, Don Pedro, Kino, Marty, Novia, Toldo) and spray carnations (Funza and Hacienda varieties). Vase life 2 to 3 weeks, stems 60 to 70 cm. Carnations are coming back into bouquets in antique tones.

Alstroemeria (Alstroemeria)

Kenyan alstroemeria: 4 to 8 flowers per stem, lasts 2 weeks and opens gradually. Varieties Charmelia Pink, Fashionista Couture, Avianna, Bubblicious, Estee, Noize, Tompouce.

Tulips (Tulipa)

Dutch tulips from January to May: Strong Gold, Dynasty, Royal Virgin, Foxtrot (double), Super Parrot, Milkshake, Tresor. Vase life 5 to 7 days, and they keep growing in the vase.

Lilies (Lilium)

Scented oriental lilies (Catemaco, Praiano, Kremlin) and OT hybrids (Galibier). Stems 90 to 110 cm, 3 to 5 flowers, vase life 10 to 14 days, opening bud after bud.

Hydrangeas (Hydrangea)

One stem is a 20 to 25 cm head: Verena (pink, blue, white), Royal Parade, Classic types in autumn. Vase life 5 to 10 days, needs a lot of water. More in Hydrangeas: varieties, colours, vase life and prices.

Orchids, anthuriums, freesias, irises, callas

  • Orchids (Cymbidium, Vanda, Phalaenopsis): a cymbidium stem with 8 to 12 flowers lasts 3 weeks.
  • Anthuriums (Acropolis, Evita Pink, Grand Slam, Marijke): waxy flowers, 2 to 3 weeks, good for bouquets for men.
  • Freesias (Mandarine, Purple King, Soleil, Volante): scented, 5 to 8 flowers per stem, about a week.
  • Irises (Blue Magic): blue, 3 to 5 days, open quickly.
  • Callas (Zantedeschia: Captain Ventura, Gold Medal, Red Charm, Snowstar): smooth, modern shapes, 10 to 14 days.

Seasonal and exotic flowers

The "EX" section of the price list has 76 lines that change with the season: dahlias (August, September), Sunrich Orange sunflowers (June to October), peonies (May, June), ranunculus and stock (spring), delphinium, campanula, snapdragons, waxflower, limonium, eryngium, protea and leucospermum from South Africa, hypericum berries, red ilex berries in winter. The florist picks whatever is freshest that day, so the composition of a seasonal bouquet changes.
